Civil Survival’s Tarra Simmons is Sworn in to the State Bar at Seattle University Ceremony
Civil Survival Executive Director Tarra Simmons was sworn in as an attorney by Judge Hull on June 16, 2018, before a large crowd of supporters at Seattle University’s Pigott Auditorium. Ms. Simmons shared details of her remarkable journey from early childhood trauma, addiction and prison to top law school graduate and social justice champion. She gave thanks to the many supporters who attended the ceremony, including Supreme Court Justices, fellow law students, the justice-involved community and many others.
Ms. Simmons received top honors in law school, including the prestigious Skadden Fellowship. Despite her hard work the Washington Bar Association’s Character and Fitness Board denied her application to sit for the Bar Exam. Ms. Simmons appealed the decision to the Washington Supreme Court. After only four hours of deliberation, the Court ruled unanimously in her favor. State Supreme Court Justice Mary Yu, who wrote the opinion allowing her to sit for the exam, was the keynote speaker.
