Summary

Civil Survival Project (CSP) is looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Communications Specialist to manage internal and external communications, including website content, social media, media relations, and event support. The Communications Specialist will write, edit, and design communications for all of Civil Survival Project’s programs by working with the team to determine content topics and coordinate the communications on social media, email campaigns, press releases, announcements, and more. 

Organization Description

Civil Survival Project organizes people who have been directly impacted by the criminal legal system to build connections, gain knowledge and increase political participation. CSP provides leadership development, offers legal education and services, and leads legislative advocacy on systemic issues that prevent former justice-involved individuals from fully reintegrating into society. Civil Survival’s work includes:

  • Organizing mass assistance days that provide legal financial obligation relief to hundreds of clients in a single day. During CSP’s mass assistance day in Pierce County, the courts waived over $2.3 million in criminal legal debt.
  • Leading systemic advocacy to make reentry legal relief accessible and automatic. CSP recently led a coalition of organizations to improve Washington’s mandatory legal financial obligations motion, allowing the motion to provide relief to tens of thousands of additional Washingtonians.
  • Hosting monthly GameChanger groups that provide justice-involved individuals a place to learn how to advocate for systemic change, overcome their own reentry barriers, and provide peer support.
  • Supporting bills that expand legal rights for justice-involved individuals. CSP was closely involved in securing the passage of the New Hope Act, which made significant improvements to Washington’s criminal record vacation process.

Job Description

The Communications Specialist will manage the internal and external communications, including but not limited to CSP’s social media and website content, media relations, and event support. This position will support all CSP programs.

The Communications Specialist will report to, and work closely with, the Policy Manager. The Policy Manager will support the Communications Specialist in identifying content topics, building connections in the community, capturing stories, and developing presentations and informational materials. This support will allow the Communications Specialist to focus on creating high-quality content for our website, social media, and events.

Key Responsibilities of this role include but are not limited to: 

  • Develop and implement a communication strategy that includes media outreach and social media content creation.
  • Research and write website content, infographics, blogs, newsletters, and presentations.Support the team with speech writing, op-eds, and other communication needs.
  • Work with the team to brainstorm content ideas aligned with the organization’s mission, values and current work objectives.
  • Create and maintain the organization’s branding and style guide.
  • Evaluate the results of communication campaigns.
  • Collect stories and photos from program participants and community leaders to be used for communications.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with representatives of regional media, and stakeholder groups.

Qualifications

  • Excellent writing and communication skills with multiple years of experience in a communications or marketing role.  
  • Ability to develop and produce multimedia content for a multitude of platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube.
  • Demonstrable social networking expertise and knowledge of social analytics tools. Familiarity and strong relationships with representatives of regional media, and stakeholder groups.
  • Strong ability to work collaboratively, both with internal colleagues and with external partners.
  • Strong organization skills. The Communications Specialist should be able to manage multiple projects and supervision responsibilities, ensuring that tasks are completed in a timely manner and lower-priority items do not slip through the cracks.
  • Ability to take a project from conception through planning and completion. Ability to balance taking the initiative with ensuring that internal and external stakeholders are included in program discussions.
  • Strong research and writing skills. Skilled at disseminating information to different audiences.Excellent editing skills and attention to detail.
  • Intermediate knowledge of WordPress website development and editing software.
  • Demonstrated cultural competence and sensitivity in working with diverse clients, communities, and colleagues.
  • Experience in a nonprofit or social services role is a plus

Location

All CSP staff work remotely. In-person work may be required to attend court hearings, meetings, and organizational retreats. Travel within Washington may be required. Applicants from all parts of Washington State are encouraged to apply.

Compensation

Salary range is $60,000-$85,000, depending on experience. Within the position salary range, salary increases annually. An additional annual cost of living increase is provided at the discretion of the Board of Directors. Benefits include:

  • 17 paid holidays, including the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day;
  • 15 days vacation, accrued annually, increasing to 20 days vacation, accrued annually;
  • 12 personal days, accrued annually; and
  • Monthly $50 employer cell phone contribution.
