Tarra Simmons, Executive Director of Civil Survival, recently spoke to Eric Tegethoff from the Public News Service about a new bill, called the Fair Chance Act, proposing a statewide Ban the Box law. The law would prevent potential employers from asking about an applicant’s criminal history until after they determine whether the applicant is qualified for the position. Simmons explains that similar laws adopted elsewhere have increased opportunities for former inmates to find employment, thereby helping to break the cycle of incarceration.
